Lights, Camera, Coastline: Your Los Angeles Escape

The iconic Hollywood sign on a hill under a clear sky.

Sun. Stars. Coast

Los Angeles isn’t just a city—it’s an experience made up of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own energy, personality, and pace. One minute you’re walking along the beach, the next you’re standing on a movie set, and by night you’re overlooking a skyline lit up under palm trees.

The key to loving LA? Don’t rush it. Plan it in pieces, and let each area feel like its own mini trip.

Getting There & Getting Around

Most travelers arrive through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is centrally located but heavily congested. Depending on the time of day, getting from the airport to your hotel can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour.

Transportation in LA is where planning really matters.

  • Rental Car: The best option for flexibility and exploring multiple areas
  • Rideshare: Uber and Lyft are convenient but can get expensive with distance and surge pricing
  • Public Transit: Available, but not ideal for most tourist itineraries

 Kristin on the Go Tip:
Group your plans by location (beach day, Hollywood day, downtown day). This will save you hours of time and frustration

Where to Stay

Where you stay in Los Angeles will shape your entire experience. Think of it less like one city and more like choosing your “home base vibe.”

Santa Monica (Coastal Stay)

  • Walkable, safe, and scenic
  • Easy access to the beach, shopping, and restaurants
  • Great for a relaxed start to your trip

Hollywood

  • Close to major attractions
  • More tourist-heavy, but convenient
  • Good for shorter stays or first-time visitors

Beverly Hills / West Hollywood

  • Upscale hotels, dining, and shopping
  • Central location between beach and city
  • Ideal for a polished, luxury feel

Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA)

  • Best for nightlife, rooftop bars, and food scene
  • Arts District and cultural attractions nearby
  • Less touristy, more urban energy

Kristin On the Go Tip:
Stay a few nights on the coast, then move downtown. It completely changes the feel of your trip and cuts down on long drive times.

Save Money with a City Pass

If you’re planning to visit multiple attractions, the Go City Los Angeles Pass can be a smart way to save.

What’s Included

Depending on the pass you choose, you can access:

  • Universal Studios Hollywood
  • Studio tours and sightseeing tours
  • Museums and attractions throughout the city

Pass Options

  • All-Inclusive Pass: Unlimited attractions for a set number of days
  • Explorer Pass: Choose a specific number of attractions

Kristin on the Go Tip:
This is best for travelers planning full sightseeing days. If your trip leans more toward beach time and exploring neighborhoods, you may not get full value.

What to Do in Los Angeles

 Hollywood & Iconic LA

Start with the must-see spots that define Los Angeles.

Walk along the Hollywood Walk of Fame—yes, it’s busy and a little chaotic, but it’s part of the experience. You’ll find stars from every era of entertainment, and it’s fun spotting your favorites. Right nearby, the TCL Chinese Theatre showcases handprints and footprints from legendary actors.

And of course, the Hollywood Sign is a must. You can view it from multiple points or hike closer for a more immersive experience.

Griffith Park & Observatory

Located in Griffith Park, the Griffith Observatory is one of the most iconic and rewarding stops in LA.

  • Panoramic views of the entire city
  • Clear sightlines of the Hollywood Sign
  • Free to enter (observatory building)
  • Access to hiking trails

Kristin on the Go Tip:
Arrive late afternoon and stay through sunset. Watching the city transition from day to night here is unforgettable.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour (a Kristin on the Go fave!)

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is one of the most immersive experiences in LA.

  • Walk through real working studio lots
  • Visit soundstages and filming locations
  • Explore iconic sets

And yes—if you love Friends, you’ll get to step into recreated sets like Central Perk. It’s one of those “this is actually happening” moments.

 Kristin on the Go Tip:
Book in advance- it will sell out!

Beach Days

The coast is where LA slows down—and it’s a must.

Santa Monica Pier

  • Classic boardwalk experience
  • Ferris wheel, street performers, shops
  • Great for first-time visitors

Venice Beach

  • More eclectic and energetic
  • Street art, performers, Muscle Beach
  • Unique and very “LA”

Malibu

  • Scenic coastal drives
  • Less crowded beaches
  • Perfect for a slower, more relaxed day

Arts, Culture & Museums

Los Angeles has a surprisingly strong arts scene.

  • The Getty Center – Art, architecture, and stunning views
  • Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) – Famous Urban Light installation

Theme Park Experience

Spend a full day at Universal Studios Hollywood.

  • Thrill rides and immersive attractions
  • Studio tour included with admission
  • Great for all ages

 Kristin on the Go Tip:
Arrive early or upgrade to express passes if visiting during peak times.

Where to Eat

Los Angeles is one of the best food cities in the country, and the variety is unmatched.

Must-try experiences:

  • In-N-Out Burger – A California staple
  • Taco trucks – Authentic, affordable, and everywhere
  • Sushi in West LA – Fresh and high-quality
  • Brunch in Santa Monica or West Hollywood

Neighborhood food scenes:

  • Koreatown – Korean BBQ and late-night eats
  • Downtown LA – Trendy restaurants and global cuisine
  • Silver Lake – Coffee shops, casual bites, and local favorites

Shopping & Exploring

Los Angeles offers everything from luxury shopping to local markets.

  • Rodeo Drive – High-end designer shopping
  • The Grove – Shopping, dining, and entertainment
  • Melrose Avenue – Trendy boutiques and streetwear

Hidden Gem: Santee Alley

  • Open-air market in the Fashion District
  • Hundreds of vendors and great deals
  • Fast-paced, local, and very different from typical shopping areas

Kristin on the Go Tip:
Go during the day, stay aware of your surroundings, and be ready to explore—you can find amazing deals here.

Nightlife & Entertainment

 LA comes alive at night.

  • Hollywood Bowl – Outdoor concerts under the stars
  • The Comedy Store – Top-tier comedy shows
  • Rooftop bars in DTLA – City views and nightlife

When to Visit

  • Spring: Best overall weather
  • Fall: Warm and less crowded
  • Summer: Lively but busy
  • Winter: Mild and quieter

What to Know Before You Go

  •  Traffic is unavoidable—plan ahead
  • Parking can be expensive and limited
  • Distances are larger than expected
  • Layers help—coastal evenings can be cool

Final Thoughts

Los Angeles becomes unforgettable when you experience it in layers—coast, culture, entertainment, and city life all woven together.

It’s not about doing everything.
It’s about doing the right things… at the right pace.

And when you do that, LA just works
