Santa Fe Escape: Art, Adobe & Desert Magic

Welcome to Sante Fe

Southwest soul. Culture-rich. Slow travel vibes.

Santa Fe is one of those places that feels completely different the second you arrive. Set high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this city blends Native American, Spanish, and Mexican influences into a culture that’s rich, artistic, and deeply rooted in history.

Expect adobe architecture, glowing sunsets, an incredible food scene, and a slower pace that encourages you to actually enjoy where you are instead of rushing through it.

Getting There

Getting to Santa Fe is part of the adventure—and a little planning goes a long way.

Fly Into Santa Fe (Small & Easy)

Santa Fe Regional Airport

  • Small airport with limited direct flights (mainly from hubs like Dallas, Denver, Phoenix)
  • Super quick in and out—minimal crowds, easy baggage claim, no stress
  • Great option if you prefer convenience over price

Best for: Easy arrival, shorter travel day, less hassle

Fly Into Albuquerque (Most Popular Option)

Albuquerque International Sunport

  • About 1 hour from Santa Fe
  • More flight options and typically better pricing
  • Major airlines fly here regularly

From Albuquerque to Santa Fe:

  • 🚗 Rental car – easiest and most flexible option
  • 🚐 Shuttle services available
  • 🚆 Rail Runner train – scenic and budget-friendly option

Best for: More flight choices + saving money

Driving In

If you’re road-tripping, Santa Fe is incredibly scenic to drive into.

  • From Albuquerque – about 1 hour
  • From Denver – about 6 hours
  • From Phoenix – about 7 hours

Expect wide-open landscapes, mountain views, and that classic Southwest desert scenery.

 Take the Train

The New Mexico Rail Runner runs between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

  • Relaxing, no driving required
  • Scenic desert and mountain views
  • Budget-friendly option

Good to know: Once you arrive, you’ll likely still want a car or plan to stay near the plaza for walkability.

Must-See & Do

Historic Heart of the City

Start at Santa Fe Plaza—the center of everything.

  • Browse handmade jewelry under the portal of the Palace of the Governors
  • Explore local boutiques and artisan shops
  • Take in the laid-back energy with street performers and live music

This is the perfect first stop to get your bearings and feel the rhythm of the city.

Canyon Road Art Walk

Canyon Road is a must—even if you’re not an art collector.

  • Over 100 galleries in a half-mile stretch
  • Outdoor sculpture gardens and hidden courtyards
  • A mix of traditional Southwestern and contemporary art

Go early for a quiet stroll or late afternoon for that warm desert glow.

Meow Wolf Experience

Meow Wolf Santa Fe is immersive, interactive, and honestly a little mind-bending.

  • Walk through a house that leads to entirely different worlds
  • Discover hidden doors, tunnels, and storylines
  • Engage with art in a way that’s playful and unexpected

It’s a fun contrast to Santa Fe’s traditional side.

Cultural & Historic Landmarks

  • Loretto Chapel – famous for its spiral staircase mystery
  • Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi – stunning architecture right near the plaza
  • San Miguel Chapel – often recognized as the oldest church in the U.S.

These stops give you a deeper appreciation for Santa Fe’s layered history.

A perfect way to slow down and fully enjoy the setting.

Where to Eat

Santa Fe’s food scene is all about bold flavors and chile-based dishes. You’ll hear this everywhere:
“Red, green, or Christmas?” (Christmas = both)

Must-Try Dishes

  • Green chile enchiladas (stacked, not rolled)
  • Blue corn tacos
  • Carne adovada
  • Sopapillas with honey

Local Favorites

  • The Shed – classic New Mexican cuisine
  • Cafe Pasqual's – colorful and perfect for breakfast or brunch
  • Geronimo – upscale dining on Canyon Road

Shopping

Santa Fe is one of the best places in the U.S. for authentic, handcrafted goods.

  • Turquoise and silver jewelry
  • Handmade pottery
  • Woven textiles and artisan pieces

Take your time browsing—this isn’t rushed shopping, it’s part of the experience.

Where to Stay

  • La Fonda on the Plaza – historic and centrally located
  • Inn of the Five Graces – luxury with a unique design
  • Drury Plaza Hotel Santa Fe – great value and walkable location

Staying near the plaza keeps everything within easy reach.

Kristin On The Go Travel Tip

Santa Fe is all about slowing down and soaking it in. Don’t overpack your itinerary. Leave space to wander, discover hidden galleries, and enjoy long meals.

Also—the altitude is real (over 7,000 ft). Plan a lighter first day, hydrate, and ease into activities so you can fully enjoy your trip.

Final Take

Santa Fe isn’t about checking off a list—it’s about how a place makes you feel.

Between the adobe architecture, rich cultural history, vibrant art scene, and unforgettable food, Santa Fe offers a travel experience that feels both grounding and inspiring. It’s the kind of destination where mornings start slow, afternoons are spent wandering, and evenings end with a glowing sunset and a great meal.

If you’re looking for something a little different—something with depth, character, and a true sense of place—Santa Fe delivers in a way few destinations do.
